I was amazed to see 7188 Eon's shipped to the Hyundai dealership's right 15 days before its launch. This is a very intelligent move by the company and would enable it capture the market early.
Hyundai's strategies have worked well for the company till now - be it entering the Indian market with Santro or capitalizing the premium hatchback space with the uber-stylish i20; also the i10 has helped company gain good numbers. The recent launch and success of the fluidic Verna has also showcased Hyudai's Design prowess. Verna easily overtook the well established Honda City and VW's Vento and established it as the leader in the sedan space.
Eon has to play a very crucial role for Hyundai. Hyundai has always been devoid of the top OEM spot because of its lackluster performance in number-crunching entry level hatchback space. This is prominently ruled by Maruti Suzuki's Alto and was more strengthened after the introduction of K10. This could be evident from the fact that in some months the sales number of Alto alone would overtake the combined sales figure of Hyundai's portfolio.
This product could be a game changer for Hyundai. But this can be a very challenging game - even a revolutionary product like Tata's Nano couldn't shake Alto's dominance. Even Chevrolet's Beat being a worthy competitor couldn't prove as a threat to Alto and had an average run in this segment over the years. And as petrol prices increase, people's inclination towards diesel cars would also be more.
As an overall package Eon seems to continue Hyundai's fluidic philosophy and we are sure that it will be launched near the 3 Lac price point to take Alto head on!
